So far SPECS has been able to continue with business as usual during the shutdown due to Covid 19 and is grateful for the opportunity to give back in a small way to farmers and food banks that have been impacted. Some farmers lost their supply chain with the closure of many restaurants, leaving fresh produce unpurchased. Meanwhile, families with income reductions were forced to request assistance from food banks in larger numbers. We researched and connected with some local businesses and farmers and purchased over 1,500 pounds of fresh produce. One such purchase was made through Valentine at Aviara Parkway Farms, he helped us pack up the truck with lettuce, butternut squash, artichokes, celery, green cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, and many other veggies which were then donated to the North County Food Bank in Vista.
Many families from the School of the Madeleine teamed up with us to purchase 300 pounds of avocados from the Mullins Family Farm which were donated to the Jewish Family Service Food Bank in San Diego.
