SPECS partnered with Geneva Pipe in Salt Lake City to supply a 44-foot span three-sided precast concrete arch to Dry Creek Structures. This bridge was a joint effort between UDOT and Highland City, UT, to extend Canal Boulevard in Highland to connect to Harvey Boulevard in American Fork. The American Fork River is delineated as Waters of the U.S., and Horrocks Engineers selected a precast concrete three-sided arch structure to avoid permanent impacts to the river. SPECS supported Horrocks in the preliminary design phase to coordinate on foundation details, retaining walls and more.
The project was bid through UDOT in April 2020, and construction started in July 2020. The City diverted the river flows to irrigation during the short construction window. The precast components were delivered and installed over two days, with earthwork commencing immediately after installation to allow the river flows back through the structure.
The bridge lies adjacent to an existing neighborhood park as well as private residences, so the City and UDOT opted to include a formliner on the retaining walls to enhance the structure facade.
At the time of precast installation, paving was scheduled for October, in line with the project schedule.
